Here is a brief history of the modern toilet from 1596 to the current times -
1596 - The first time the modern toilet made an appearance was in 1596. Queen Elizabeth I had a godson - Sir John Harrington - who was responsible for this invention. He made a toilet for himself and later, created another one for the queen. This toilet had a flushing system and was called “Ajax”. It had a cistern behind it and the sewer drain underneath. Buckets were filled with water to fill the cistern and a plug was pulled down for flushing. This mechanism allowed the water to pass from the cistern into the toilet and empty the waste into the sewer drain with the help of another plug.
1700s - This toilet for built for Marie Antoinette in the Palace of Versailles. In fact, this toilet can still be seen today as it has been kept intact. It was built in the royal chambers of the queen and most people were unaware about the toilet’s existence except her closest staff and chambermaids.
1851 - The first flushing and public toilets of the world were unveiled in 1851 but they were not free. Before using these modern toilets, people had to offer a penny. These public toilets were installed in the Crystal Palace.
The other names for the modern toilet include the “commode”, “closed stool”, “water-stool” or “privy”. Eventually, many toilet manufacturers started business and toilets were installed in individual houses. Plumbings were accordingly changed to accommodate toilets.
The toilets of the current world are a basic requirement and even homes in third world countries have one. Types of modern toilet include bidet toilets, toilets with cleaning seats, heated toilets, water saving toilets, top flush toilets, back flush toilets, and dual flush toilets.
